Google has released a new stable version, 17·0·963·66, of its Chrome browser for all platforms: Windows, Linux, Mac OS X, and Chrome Frame. This update was perhaps slightly confusing. Originally, Google offered version 17·0·963·65 on Sunday, March 4. That version fixed a number of bugs, including:
- Cursors and backgrounds sometimes do not load
- Plugins not loading on some pages
- Text paste includes trailing spaces
- Websites using touch controls break
It also fixed 14 identified security vulnerabilities, 13 of which Google rated as High severity, and incorporated the recently-released new version of the embedded Adobe Flash Player. More details on these changes are available in the Release Announcement.
However, a problem was found with that new version’s handling of one particular JavaScript construct, and it was temporarily withdrawn. A corrected new version, the current 17·0·963·66, was released yesterday.
Because of its security content, I do recommend that you check that your system is updated. Windows and Mac users should get the new version via the built-in update mechanism. Linux users should get the updated package from their distributions’ repositories, using their standard package maintenance tools. You can verify that your system has been updated by clicking on the tools menu (the little wrench), and then on “About Google Chrome”.
