Microsoft Patch Tuesday Preview, December 2011

December 8, 2011

In keeping with its usual schedule, today  Microsoft released its Security Bulletin Advanced Notification for December, previewing the security fixes it intends to release next Tuesday, December 13.   Microsoft plans to release 14 security bulletins this month; nine of the bulletins are for Windows itself, and five are for Microsoft Office components.  Three of the Windows bulletins have a maximum severity rating of Critical; the rest of the Windows bulletins, and all of the Office bulletins, are rated Important.   All supported versions of Windows are affected, and have at least one Critical patch.  The table below shows the breakdown of Windows patches by version and severity:

Windows Version Critical Important Moderate Low
Windows XP+SP3 3 6
Windows Vista 2 5
Windows Server 2003 2 5 1
Windows Server 2008 1 4 1
Windows 7 1 6
Windows Server 2008 R2 1 4

According to Microsoft, six of the bulletins will require a system restart, and the others may require one, depending on your system’s configuration.

Three of the five Office bulletins also affect Office for Mac.  One also applies to the PowerPoint viewer and the Office 2007 file format compatibility pack.

As always, this information is subject to change between now and the actual release of the bulletins next Tuesday.  I will post a note here once the actual updates are available.
