Microsoft Patch Tuesday Preview, May 2011

In keeping with its usual schedule, Microsoft released its Security Bulletin Advanced Notification for May on Thursday, previewing the security fixes it plans to release on Tuesday, May 10.   Beleaguered system administrators will probably be relieved to know that there are only two bulletins scheduled for this month, after April’s bumper crop of 17.  One of the bulletins affects Windows Server 2003, Server 2008, and Server 2008 Release 2, and is rated Critical; however, other supported versions of Windows are not affected.  In particular, this bulletin should not affect most desktop or laptop machines.  The second bulletin affects Microsoft Office and its components, and is rated Important.   Mac users who use Office should note that this bulletin does affect the Mac version of the software.  Microsoft says that either of these fixes may require a reboot, depending on your system configuration.

As always, the details of these bulletins are subject to change until the actual release is made on Tuesday.  I will post another note then with updates information.
