Security Update for Java

October 12, 2010

Oracle has released a new Version 6 Update 22 of its Java software (which it acquired along with Sun Microsystems).  This version fixes 29 identified security vulnerabilities; further details are in the Critical Patch Update Advisory, and in the Update Release Notes.  A number of other bugs were also fixed.

The new version is available for Windows, Linux, and Solaris systems, and can be downloaded here; alternatively, the update mechanism included with the software can be used.  (Mac users should note that Apple maintains its own versions of Java, and typically takes at least a few weeks to get the latest updates.)   Because of its security content, I recommend installing this update as soon as you conveniently can.

Microsoft Security Patches, October 2010

October 12, 2010

Microsoft today released its expected bumper crop of security fixes.   There are 16 bulletins this month, of which twelve are for Windows and its components, two for Office (including Office for Mac), and two for server software: Office for Web, and Share Point.  Every supported version of Windows has at least one bulletin rated Critical.  More detail is available in the Security Bulletin Summary for October.  (A breakdown of patch severity by Windows version is in my preview post for this month.)

All of these patches should be available from Windows Update; alternatively, there are download links in the Security Bulletin Summary.

The SANS Internet Storm Center has posted their usual monthly summary of the released patches.

I recommend installing these patches as soon as you conveniently can.
